Sam Esse is an independent artist based in the city of Manchester bringing a charismatically soulful look into his own life and experiences through his experimental sound, hoping to provide a meaningful message for his listeners while finding his own cathartic release through his musical career. Following on from his releases last year in ‘Stuck’ and ‘Running Away From Love’ Sam has now released his latest single ‘Roots To The Ground’ aiming once more to provide a musical window into his recent experiences.
With ‘Roots To The Ground’ Sam creates a brilliantly warm and characterful sound, combining groovy percussion, an incredibly rich bassline and playful guitar riffs with Sam’s typically talented vocals to great effect. Layering up beautifully, this single encapsulates Sam’s wonderful sound while providing an excellent vessel for his routinely thought provoking and emotive lyricism.

Unfortunately, with a run time of less than 2 minutes I very much would have preferred this song to be longer, sub 2 minutes just feels too short. However, while this may be the case I feel like it’s a good problem to have, the song certainly leaves you wanting more – its just finding that balance between leaving the listener wanting more and not giving them enough.
Overall ‘Roots To The Ground’ is another excellent addition to Sam’s growing portfolio, providing once more an example of his obviously superb musicianship and instrumental talents. Giving elements of Tom Misch and Jacob Collier, Sam Esse is definitely an artist to look into.
